The village of Panagia is situated seven kilometers from Thasos, with an altitude of about 200m. This is one of the most beautiful villages of Thassos. It is unclear as to when it took its present name, but its original name (in Byzantine years) was "Anastasion". Previously, was the capital of the island.
Panagia is a traditional village, very cool, with plenty of cold water springs that gush out in a square, located between houses and beneath towering, ancient trees. It has wonderful views to the mountain, the plain and the valley.
Near the village (about one quarter on foot from the center of the village) is a beautiful cave with stalactites and stalagmites, called "Drakotrypa." The cave has not been explored in all its extent and all its depth.
Entering the village there is a little road on the left side, which leads to the sea on a beautiful beach called "Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammoudia)". The distance of the beach from Panagia is approximately five kilometers. The beach is located between the cape of the Tower (Pyrgos) and the tip of the island Gramvousa.
Panagia is a popular destination for tourists visiting the island in summer and in winter also attracts many people because of the famous carnival organized annually. In the village is worth visiting the chapels there, the church of Panagia, traditional taverns and buy local sweets (walnut, fig, tomato).
