The village of Maries is one of the oldest villages of Thassos about 34km away from Limenas and 8km from Limenaria. This nice village is invisible from the sea, tucked away in the mountains, as if forgotten there by the time of the pirates. Today the village does not have tourist growth however is picturesque.
As regards the name, there are two versions: the first says that the village took its name from the many mulberry trees that were there, while the second says that the name is due to two Marys (Maries) who were the only survivors of a pirate invasion in which massacred the entire population of the village.
Two sights, which are found in a near distance from the village of Maries and worth the visit, is the Monastery of the Panagia and the wonderful lake.
Going down to the sea you will meet Skala Maries, which is 12km from the village. It is a picturesque fishing village in which there are several taverns. Coming from Skala Maries you can meet the organized beach Atspa, which has clear and shallow waters.
