Sotiros

Sotiros, after the legend there was built a village, which was also called Polisma. It was built an altar to honor the half god Herakles, because he is god of the isle. The village was grounded by Pothon. Some meters above of Sotiros there were built some new houses and pensions. In the middle of the ruins you will find two churches. They are very gut preserved.

The village was built interior to protect them from the pirates. But today you are able to see the village from the sea because most of the forest is gone. Some of it is gone because of a fire and some of the trees were cut by the people. In the ruins there were found some gifts for the dead, antic graves, small pots and also a relief of a horseman. The last inhabitants are occupied agriculture and honey. Together with Skala Sotiros there are about 750 inhabitants, who are living there.

Skala Sotiros is the coastal part of the village which acquires traffic especially during the summer months. This is influenced immensely by local businesses (rooms, restaurants, gas stations, super market) as well as the beach with clean sand which is ideal for relaxation and is ideal for families and couples

Potos

Potos is located in the southwestern part of the island and is the harbor of the village Theologos. It is the first destination for new tourists, who visit the island, because the nightlife is well developed and there are several cafes, restaurants, rooms and souvenir shops.

 

 

 

Theologos

Theologos is situated 57km from Thassos and it is one of the oldest villages. The name comes in Byzantine times while according to history was inhabited much earlier. At that time indeed was the capital of the island also. That was a very important village and had a major role in the political issues of Thassos. Later, however, and particularly after the liberation of the island, that changed, because the phenomenon of piracy disappeared as a result tourism to flourish and many residents moved to the lowlands, and thus Theologos lost its glamour.

It is built in a beautiful location, with incredible view. Theologos visited by many tourists every year, to taste incredible food (especially lamb on a spit). Also each year attracts many people in early summer, where take place the representation of Thassos wedding.
Also there are some settlements where belongs to Theologos. These are, Potos, Peukari, Thimonia, Astris, Aliki and Kinira.

 

Potos

Potos is located in the southwestern part of the island and is the harbor of the village Theologos. It is the first destination for new tourists, who visit the island, because the nightlife is well developed and there are several cafes, restaurants, rooms and souvenir shops.

 

Peykari

Peykari is a very small settlement between Limenaria and Potos. Many tourists visit mainly this area to do water sports.

Another small village of Theologos is Thimonia. In this area there are ruins of a Byzantine church and two Hellenistic towers. In Thimonia the sea is very clean but the people mostly goes for a swim with vessels, because the beaches are below steep cliffs. On top of these cliffs is the monastery of the Archangel Michael, which has incredible view and a crowd gathers every year.

 

Astris

The small rural village of Astris located a few kilometers away from Potos and also belongs to Theologos. The area was named so, by the inhabitants of Theologos who descended there and they gathered olives, beneath the starry sky. On the opposite lies the uninhabited islet of "Panagia". 

In this region there are several beaches of outstanding natural beauty where someone can go there either by boat or if possible by car. At these beaches (Babouras, Agios Vasilis, etc.) many locals go for fishing. But the most famous beaches in the area are "Giola" and "Psili Ammos", which are among the most popular on the island.

 

Alyki

Another village of Theologos is Alyki. According to tradition in this region once lived Queen Alice. This is one of the oldest settlements on the island. In the back of the beach are preserved even today the ruins of an ancient settlement, while in the eastern gulf of Jericho, the ancient sanctuary survives with two buildings, which are estimated to have built in the 7th century b.C. The development of Alykes coincides with the simultaneous extraction of marble, which lasted from the 6th b.C to the 7th century a.C. The beach of Alyki is beautiful; the water is blue and is a tourist attraction. 

 

Kinira

Finally, another settlement that belongs to Theologos is Kinira. In this region there are findings of Archaic and Roman periods. The vegetation is very dense there because there is enough water in the surrounding slopes and is considered as one of the most blessed places on the island. In Kinira also belongs the islet Kiniriotiko which is uninhabited. There is only one old house which belongs to the owner of the small island. In Kinira also belongs the beach paradise, which has shallow, turquoise waters and fine sand. Many tourists visit it every year and on the back, many of them camping either with tents or with caravans.

 

 

 

 

Kallirachi

The village of Kallirachi is 27 km from Thassos and is one of the most historic villages. The village began to be built in its present location about 1750a.C and got its present name. Until then, the village was on the top of the rough mountain and that’s why the original name was “Kaki Rachi”, “Bad back”. The villagers had built their houses so high as to prevent danger from pirates. But when the risk of piracy began to eliminate, the locals abandoned their homes and moved to the foot of the mountain.

This is another picturesque village with beautiful dry and mild climate. It is ideal for mountain tours. In the area of the village there are beautiful chapels. The first is Agioi Anargyroi which celebrates on July 1st and many people come to visit it. The second is “Agia Marina” and it’s on the way to Skala Kallirachi and celebrates on July 17th. Finally, on top of the mountain you can see the magnificent chapel of “Metamorfosi toy Sotiros” which celebrates on August 6th and although the road is not appropriate, every year attracts many people.

Skala Kallirachi is located about 2 km to the sea. A picturesque fishing village that stretches along the sea in which, although devoid of hotel infrastructure there are many rooms, cafes and taverns. Also it is famous for its large harbor in which there are many yachts and fishing boats.

The beaches in the center of Kallirachi have fine sand and shallow waters, while in the region have pebbles and clear waters. It is worth mentioning that the last Sunday of July each year is organized by the local administration, the sardine festival, where crowds gather.

 

 

 

Thassos (Limenas)

Limenas (as called by locals) is the capital of the island and it is of great interest because of the archaeological wealth and natural beauty. It is built on the site of the ancient capital of the island and this witness both the ruins of ancient Thassos discovered and preserved, and the rich archaeological finds displayed in the museum. 

More specifically, in the area of Limenas is the ancient theater of Thassos in which take place there every summer ancient theater, the museum and on the left, the ancient market. Also nearby you will find the old church of Agios Nikolaos, built in 835a.C. Moreover, in the middle of the old harbor is a dependency of the monastery of Vatopedi, a two storey building of the 19th century which called Monks and is a registered trademark of Limenas. 

Limenas is located 6 nautical miles from Keramoti which is connected by ferry daily and frequent. In the capital of the island also houses all the services like the police, banks (National, Agricultural, Commercial, Eurobank and Alphabank), Post Office, and administrative offices of Social Security, Employment Agency, Thassos Town Hall, Tax Office and Bus Station. 

For several years Limenas holds the reins of tourism development. Hotels and apartments, shops with cars and motorbikes for rent, cafes, beach bar, nightclubs, taverns and restaurants are invading the island's capital. Also, the market of Limenas meets the needs of even the most discerning tourist, who before leaving the island, usually buy souvenirs and sweets. Such as Skala Prinos so as Limenas is indicated for travelers who do not have transportation.
